In a Ponemon Institute LLC benchmark study of healthcare organizations, respondents admitted having one or more incidents of loss or theft of protected health records during the past two years. Data breaches incur penalties, but they also result in lost business. In a 2008 Ponemon study, 70 percent of lost business was attributed to incidents surrounding data breaches.
