David Roberts (Hartford) joined Crowe in 2015 when we combined practices with Saslow Lufkin & Buggy. A partner in Audit, David specializes in working with insurance entities of all types and he helped to establish our insurance practice in our Cayman Island office. Outside of Crowe, David serves on the board of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CCF) local chapter and was named the "Honored Hero" of the CFF Greater Hartford Take Steps Walk taking place in May. Q: How did you become involved with CCF?A: I became involved shortly after being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in February 2014. Despite Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis impacting 1.6 million people in the U.S. and more than 5 million people worldwide, they aren't diseases that are talked about much, so I did not have a very good reference point as to what being diagnosed meant for me. I found CCF online and it was a wealth of information. In 2014, my family and I formed our first walk team for the annual Take Steps event and we found the CCF events to have a great sense of community for people who suffer from these terrible autoimmune diseases. I have had a Take Steps walk team for three years now and as Honored Hero this year, I've had an opportunity to talk about my experience with this disease and hopefully inspire other patients to tell theirs and not let these diseases stand in their way. Q. What's been the most rewarding part of your involvement with CCF?A. Seeing CCF funding that helps research to find new treatment options for patients every day is most rewarding. Even just three years out from my diagnosis, there have been several advances and new treatment options for patients. It makes me proud to know I can work with an organization that provides useful vetted information on Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis that is invaluable to patients who may feel lost like I did post-diagnosis. Q: What would people be surprised to learn about you?A: I didn't play basketball and frankly am not very good at it even with my height being 6"5. As a New Englander I grew up playing hockey instead.Q: Is there a book that has changed your perspective on life?A: The "Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. The agreements themselves and the advice in that book are invaluable in terms of viewing how we all interact with our own selves as well as others and making meaningful life changes. We put so much undue stress, criticism and judgment on ourselves and this book really puts those things into tremendous perspective.
