Over the past few years, participation in social networks has exploded. Facebook recently surpassed 600 million global registered members1 – a population equal to the third largest country in the world. Professional networking site LinkedIn boasts 100 million members2 and is growing rapidly. A recent Pew Research study reported 46 percent of U.S. Internet users have created a profile on a social networking site, more than double the number from 20063. From the perspective of individuals, social media represents essential connection, communication, and collaboration.
